Last blogpost I shared an email from a student encouraging teachers to take control of their classrooms. I just received the following email from another student who had read an article about the workshops I teach on classroom management.
Dear Dr. Kirk:
"I am a non-traditional student at [University]. When I read my local newspaper this morning I saw an article entitled, "Professor attempts to restore civility." The article pointed out the disrespectfulness of many of today's students. Sitting on the other side of the podium it is just as irritating as it is for you. I have been in classes where we (the students) have had to ask others to take their cell phone conversations out in the hall ourselves.
GOOD JOB. I am a firm believer that you must respect others if you want respect yourself. My views are different than others, I was in the workforce for 13 years, I lost my job to overseas competition. This is my chance and I need every bit of knowledge and guidance that my instructors are willing to give me. Once again Good Job!"
Keep this student in mind when addressing those disruptive students in your class. Your good students who want to learn will thank you.
