Dawn Sagario at WORKBYTES gives some great advice for college students on how to turn that summer internship into a full-time employment opportunity after graduation. You might share these tips...
Consider the internship as an audition--your chance to show that you are the kind of employee the company wants.
Even though the internship may be only for the summer, always do your best work. Be on time, be professional, show initiative and ask what other tasks you can do. Keep in mind that "past performance indicates future behavior."
Be respectful of everyone from the secretarial staff to top management. Building these relationships are important.
Avoid taking personal phone calls or checking e-mail at work.
Watch how you dress. Stay away from "clothes that are too tight, too low, too short and too sheer, and wearing too much perfume." It may be summer but you want people to note your productivity and intellect and not your inappropriate or unprofessional dress.
Network and meet people in various departments of the company. See if you can find someone to serve as a mentor. A mentor can help you understand the company's culture and office politics and essentially how to get things done.
Good advice for all of us...
